First preparatory works to begin for the construction of the extension of tram line 7
On 6 September, the first preparatory works for the construction of the extension of tram line 7 from the current tram terminus Dole to the Latgales-Višķu iela intersection will start. In the first phase, electricity cables and catenary system necessary for trolleybus operation will be built on Višķu iela. The works will also include the reconstruction of the street lighting infrastructure. At the same time, work continues on the construction project for the main route of the tram line extension, which incorporates proposals made during citizens' consultations that have shed light on issues that have been outstanding for decades, such as the access road from Višķu iela to the apartment blocks on Latgales iela. With the construction of the extension of tram line 7, this issue will be resolved.
The tram line extension will improve public transport accessibility, provide more transfer possibilities and create an environmentally friendly public transport system, which will at the same time improve the overall speed of public transport. This will be the first new tram line to be built in 40 years.
Construction design solution for the transport interchange
The total track extension of tram route 7 will be 2.2 kilometres. As part of the construction works, a public transport interchange will be built on a land plot at the Latgales-Višķu iela intersection. A new control building will be constructed to ensure functionality, as well as access roads from both Latgales iela and Višķu iela for public transport movements. The layout of the transport interchange will be convenient so that each type of transport has its own trajectory and passengers can easily transfer from one route to another without significant movement. The area will also be landscaped with large shelters, information signs, interactive information stands and boards, greenery and street lighting. The trolleybus route 15 will also be extended 300 metres along Višķu iela to the transport interchange.
The project is planned to be completed by May 2026. A contract for the design, construction and supervision of the project has been concluded with CBF SIA Binders in the amount of EUR 28 155 811.00 excluding VAT. The project is financed within the framework of the related measures 1.1.1.2.i.2. and 1.1.1.2.i.3. of the investment 1.1.1.2.i “Environmentally friendly improvements to the public transport system of the city of Riga” 1.1.1.r. reform “Greening the Riga Metropolitan Range Transport System” of the reforms and investment axis 1.1. “Emission Reduction in the Transport Sector” of the Component No. 1. “Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability” of the Recovery and Resilience Facility Plan of the European Union.
